Toushirou was happy to see that he surprised her. His tricks after all were always unique and fun. Seeing Mei's surprised face he just wanted to do it again soon, be the Baron, and perform in front of everyone while stealing a gem. This was his thought in his mind. He was already picturing it. He could actually make it so that it would rain deck cards. Of course the trick behind this is quiteeasy. Have Jiji on one of the buildings and use the machine that shoots them all he has to do is signal him and then the spectators would look the cards falling and wonder how it is done. Well if he took out the smartass standing next to him who said that he was lame, then yes everyone would wonder, he thought looking at her sheepishly. He wasn't going to comment. He would just keep it in, it was always annoying when she could see through his tricks. It meant that she was getting closer to him which was dangerous. He was also sure that she would probably figure the trick behind the falling cards too. Looking at Mei he smiled. 'At least she won't play the samrt with me' he thought. It seemed like she still was quite surprised even while she was following the two of them to the cafeteria.
It was when they got inside that Haruhi was ready to tell the trick. He looked at her in a way that he was showing his annoyance. "Oi, Haruhi, my tricks should remain between us. And see? The girl doesn't want to know!" He said and poked her shoulder causing her to poke him back. He sat down and then he saw Mei sitting also. Then the question came. How long do you know each other. Shiro smiled to her and looked at Haruhi then he opened his mouth to speak.
"Our parents are best friends, so we grew up together, you could say that we have been hanging out since we were babies!" He said and looked at the waitress inviting her at the table so that they could order. The waitress seemed to be young and very cute with long black hair and a nice blue casual dress with a black apron on the front having the cafeteria logo embroidered on it. She smiled to then as she came to the table and said "I will be here soon, wait!" Leaving she looked at Shirou for a while batting her eyelashes and he just smiled but feeling threatened somehow he touched Haruhi's hand and immediately pulled his hand.
"So as you can see even if I did not want to have a friend like her, always acting smart, I am doomed to be her friend for the rest of my life!" He said in a teasing tone trying to see Haruhi's reaction.

-------------- “How do you hang out when you’re babies?” Mei mumbled to herself, not really aiming the question to anyone as Shirou had his exchange with the waitress. “Don’t you just hit each other with toys and stuff…” she trailed off, wriggling her toes in her shoes and tracing her fingers in circles against the edge of the table.
Although she wasn’t the most observant person, she observed the quick hand touch between the two opposite her. Her eyes quickly flitted up to stare at the ceiling instead, the friends-turned-maybe-more spark that flickered between the pair of friends in front of her was something hugely unfamiliar to the non-romantic that Mei was, and she felt a little uneasy as she sat across the table from them, feeling like a teacher at parents evening.
“Haruhi’s definitely a bright spark,” Mei giggled, clapping her hands suddenly before propping her chin up in one palm, her elbow tediously balanced on the edge of the table. “Don’t know why on Earth she’d want to be friends with a low ranking student like me.” Despite hating it, she was very open about being at the bottom of her year group. Sometimes she just opened her mouth and the words came out without her thinking, but in a way, she knew she was clever in other ways. She may not be a high ranking, intelligent teenager like Haruhi or her childhood friend, but she knew she had endless knowledge in the world, in the streets, having grown up in the real world her whole life that maybe these two second years didn’t know, still caught up in their own world and lives.
“Did you grow up in Japan, then?” she quickly asked; she wasn’t usually the curious sort, but being her chatty self she found that if she kept talking she’d feel more comfortable. Having grown up in Taiwan, she was a little wistful that she’d never experienced that sort of friendship from such a young age other than with her brothers. --------------

Haruhi looked at how happy he was that Mei didn't want to know the trick. She immediately had the urge to kick him under the table but she decided against it. He was always like that with those tricks of his. And as for Mei, it seemed as if she has happy not knowing anything about it. Well for her it didn't mind because she believed that such tricks are meant to deceive her eyes and it was not like her to let those tricks fool her. Being the intelligent person that she was and having the photographic memory almost nothing could go by her mind without her noticing it.
And then Mei asked how long the two of them know each other and Shirou went and said the idiotic phrase that they know each other since they were babies. Well although it was true he did not explain to Mei the details and what he meant exactly and at that moment she immediately heard Mei's mumble and she was ready to answer to her but he touched her hand and then left it. Apparently it was by accident so she just shook it off. But he dared to say something weird again.
"I am sorry for being a nuisance!" She said as a vein on her forehead twitched and her fist 'accidentally' hit his side. "You see, Mei, this useless person's mother and my mother enjoyed playing dolls with us when we were babies. They acted as if we were talking, this was happening for at least until we got 2 years old." She said to her showing her from her tone that she thought of their mothers as crazy. "And then after that we were playing with a big cube. You see our houses were always opposite to each other, and my mother was taking me to his house or something his mother would take him to our house. So we would play a lot together. Then at around 3 years old we were going to the same institute for kids with special abilities, since our parents found out that we have exceptional abilities, my photographic memory and his IQ." She explained to her.
But then she heard Mei saying those words about her and she blushed. But then, when she spoke badly of herself Haruhi eyed her. "What are you saying Mei-san, you are a brilliant person, IQ is not everything in this world! And I do not make friends with high IQ only. I make friends that are kind hearted." She said to her wagging her finger. "So do not speak badly of yourself. I am sure that you are smart too. Doing good at school and smartness are two different things after all!" She said to her smirking.
And then the great question, if they grew up in Japan... came. "Hmmm, yes we grew up in Japan then we moved in New York, and went to the Institute of people with special abilities on America. So we were there together too. But then for a reason, I came back, and it seems like the idiot decided to follow!" She said looking at him being shifty. She didn't want to tell the reason of course. That it had to do with her mother's job. "I had solved some cases there in New York, a lot of killing. There is a thief there, Aoi Baron. He is annoying but very intelligent. He performs weird tricks and disguises himself to escape from the police. I do not know if you want to hear more about him. He is the only criminal I have yet to see his face and catch!" She said and looked at Shirou to see his reaction to her words. After all she still had that feeling that maybe, just maybe he was her worst rival.
