The cafeteria was pretty much empty when Akira finally reached it. The large room was usually full of people, so it was a bit of a surprise to see it so desolate, especially at lunch time. However, looking at his watch, Akira noticed that he was nearly five minutes early for lunch. Huh? I thought I heard the bell ringing... Akira thought as he walked into the empty room, feet making solitary clunks in the peace and quiet. Blinking in confusion, Akira leaned in through the doorway, eyes dashing from side to side as he tried to see where he had gone wrong. Eyes which were, as had come to be expected of Saito Akira, not particularly natural in colour. For reasons unknown even to himself, Akira liked to use various coloured contact lenses, and today those lenses were blue in the left eye, and green in the right eye. He had gotten the idea from playing Final Fantasy X on his PlayStation the night before, though whether he had gotten the right colour in the right eye, he wasn't all that sure. But he didn't really care. Already he had received a few weirded-out stares from his fellow classmates, and he had to smile every time, wondering when they would stop being perplexed by his less-than-customary appearance.
Taking a careful step into the cafeteria, Akira kept his eyes open, but raised his watch to his ear as he was doing so. He shook his wrist a few times, but nope, the watch still ticked gently away. So how had Akira managed to be this early for lunch? Well, he had admittedly not attended his last class, but who could blame him? It was maths, and that was his worst subject by far. Not that he was particularly good in any of the other classes either, but maths was certainly the bane of his academic life. Akira had never been particularly academic. Sure, he was smart enough to pass his classes and not come too near the bottom, but he still had a long way to go compared to others.
With a deep sigh, Akira walked confidently over to the counter. It felt strange being one of the first ones here; he was usually quite slow when it came to getting in line for food. However, just as he began to smell the rich flavours of the canteen penetrate his nostrils, Akira's stomach let out a low growl. Embarrassed even though there weren't many people around, Akira's face went lightly red. He had always had a terrible problem with blushing -- perhaps that was why people had always mistaken him for a girl when he was younger. Actually, thinking about it, people still sometimes mistook Akira for a girl, though nowadays he didn't really care. Living in an all-female (minus one!) household had made him quite immune to any rigorous borders of gender.
"Aww, Akira-chan, you sound hungry!" The obaa-san behind the counter said in a soft tone, picking up a plate and server, quickly pointing out some foods, "Here, have this dish; Sakura made it especially this morning, and she assures me that it's very filling!" With a smile, Akira nodded in agreement.
"Arigato! I was in a hurry this morning so I missed breakfast." Scratching the side of his neck, Akira's blush deepened slightly as the lady tutted him, going on to explain how breakfast was the most important meal of the day and shouldn't be missed under any circumstances. "Gomennasai! I'll be sure not to miss breakfast again." Still smiling sheepishly, Akira took the very full plate offered to him, and went to pay for his lunch. He picked up a carton on the way, then went to sit down at a table.
Akira sighed. It was quite lonely sitting in this cafeteria when there were so few people here. Normally he would go at sit on a table that already had people on it due to there never being any empty ones. Though of course he loved sitting with others as it meant there were more people to talk to. Lunch is never supposed to be eaten alone, he thought, picking up his chopsticks and digging into his food, a childishly upset look on his face.

The class was so boring. He literally could not take it anymore, being in class listening to the teacher speaking the horrible English. He was feeling the blood flowing up his head making him kind of mad. It was literally a torture that he was put through. Not only he had no idea what the teacher was trying to pronounce but also he could not bare Haruhi poking his back with her sharp nail. Sure it was not that painful but Toushirou had a hate for back-poking. He did not mind if she would poke his cheek but his back and forehead where different.
Without much thinking he just stood and bowed slightly. "Sensei I am not feeling very well!" He said touching his forehead in an elegant and cool way trying to convince her to let him go to the infirmary. "May I go to the infirmary?" he asked her with looking at her with a face that seemed as if he was in pain and needed help no matter what. The female students sighed when he said that and the teacher just nodded. Toushirou just bowed slightly again. "Arigatou gozaimasu!" he said silently and walked out of the class slowly.
The moment he closed the door behind him he stretched grinned and ran away before he would get discovered by Haruhi's instinct. He was tired and because he was preparing his next thievery act during the night he did not eat anything therefore he was in need for food and what was the best place for him to be? Of course the cafeteria.
Thus, Toushirou was outside the cafeteria in no time, entered it and immediately went to the counter. He bowed to the old lady and gave her a cute smile. "I will take this pudding and the sandwich!" He said with his low voice and put those on the disk in front of him. "Chotto ne?" He said and went to pay them at the till. Immediately though he turned around brushed his hair back and with one hand he picked up his disk and scanned the cafeteria to find a a table.
Toushirou was not the kind of guy who would care much about where he could sit but he was very interested in making new friends but since he saw that most of those who were there were already talking loudly he got annoyed and chose to sit next to the blond guy who was alone. He stood firmly and walked to his table. Looked at him and smiled. "I hope you do not mind, I do not like eating alone but I also do not like eating and having others talking loudly in my ears!" He whispered to him and sat at the chair opposite to Saito's.
"Hitsugaya Toushirou da! Year 2,Class A. I transferred here a week ago! Yoroshiku!" He said bowing to him as a sign of saying hello and ripped apart the gelatin that was wrapped on the sandwich taking his first bite feeling finally happy that he was going to eat.

The sullen and childish look that had been gracing Akira's face disappeared instantly as soon as the other boy approached. Even though from that distance Akira had no idea whether the other would even sit on the table ten yards away let alone his table, Akira had a feeling that he would soon be making a new acquaintance. So, his usual happy smile back on his somewhat-feminine face, Akira waited.
He didn't have to wait long. No sooner had the previous thoughts of not having to sit alone anymore crossed his mind, than the dark-haired boy was standing next to his table. Raising his head, Akira saw the smile on the other boy's face, and smiled back in turn. Although, his smile was a little food-filled, so he quickly closed his mouth and swallowed, his face taking on that pinkish tinge once again. Trust him to get embarrassed twice in less than ten minutes. However, hopefully the other boy hadn't noticed.
"I hope you do not mind, I do not like eating alone but I also do not like eating and having others talking loudly in my ears!" Still in the process of swallowing his food, Akira nodded quickly and gestured to the seat opposite him. Please don't choke, Akira thought, a small panic rising in him as an annoyingly stubborn piece of food decided to be mean and not go down easily, You'll make even more of a fool of yourself! In these situations, Akira stood back on an old tactic, and imagined his mother's stern voice in his head: "Pull yourself together, Akira! I will not have you making such a fool of yourself in a public place. Now, SWALLOW!" And with that, Akira managed to get the stubborn piece of food to go down his throat. He wondered why it was just his luck for this to happen to him today....
Just as this thought crossed through his head, the other boy started by introducing himself. And, with a woman stern on politeness as a mother, Akira replied quickly in kind, sketching a small bow as well, "Hajimemashite, Saito Akira desu! Douzo yoroshiku." Akira's smile became inquisitive. So that was why he had never seen this boy before; he was new to the school. "So you're in class A, Hitsugaya-san? You must be quite clever then." Akira sighed, sounding jealous that he weren't as clever, "I'm in class B, but I've always thought that it doesn't matter whether you're really clever or whether you're not. Though of course that could just be wishful thinking on my part." Akira started laughing, but quickly stopped, looking at Hitsugaya-san with wide eyes and shocked expression.
"Gomennasai! You said you didn't like people being noisy." Like before with the lady behind the counter, Akira scratched the side of his neck, a sheepish look on his face. "I'm afraid I get quite chatty with new people. I always get told off for being nosey, so I'll just be quiet now!" Smiling again, Akira quickly picked up his chopsticks and once more dug into his food, so that he couldn't annoy the other boy by being noisy anymore. If there was one thing he had learned in his so-far short life, it was that first impressions were everything when meeting new people. However, Akira wasn't too sure he'd done so well this time He would have to make sure to be less intrusive and pay more attention to what other people say next time....

Toushirou was relieved that he was not one of those guys that was loud. He did not mind people talking to him but what he could not take the most was when people were loud in his ears while he was eating. His famous saying after all is 'stop annoying me when I eat, people do not even annoy the animals when they eat why do you annoy me?' or something like that. But this had nothing to do with the boy of course. He seemed fun to be with and he was not one of those snobs. He was an interesting fellow.
"Hai, sou desu!!" He said nodding calmly and smiling in a simple way with his face not having any vital changes like wrinkles forming from it. "Class A. I would not call myself too smart though. "He said shrugging taking another bite and swallowing it quickly. "I also believe that intelligence is not an issue, it is the personality that counts!" He added to what he was saying as he leaned back on his chair putting his right leg on the other like a man would. It was one of his habbits that he acquired in the US.
Toushirou had the habbit of doing that in order to relax more with those who he would first meet. At that moment though Saito was already stopping speaking because of a misinterpretation of what he had said and he chuckled after he heard his explanation so he immediately used his hands to calm him a little still holding his sandwich. "Don't worry about it. Speak all you want!" He started nodding friendly to him. "I do not mind if you talk!" He said and snapping the fingers of his left hand a deck of cards appeared and he put it on the table. "I only get annoyed by people who speak loudly next to my ears!" He explained to him putting on his face a frinedly expression that could calm Saito.
"So Saito-san do not concern yourself with that!" He said and took another bite of his sandwich. But what he really wanted to eat the most, was the pudding. He had heard from Haa-chan that it was the best pudding and he wanted to taste it himself. Apparently she was eating it a lot because she had found a way to reach the cafeteria more quickly than anyone else especially for it, but for that day he had decided to buy one for her before she would come. Maybe it would be a nice thing to do and they would get closer a bit. 'Who am I kidding?' he thought at that moment forgetting about it.
"In the US, you see, people are really loud, and wherever you go they shout somewhat, and speak too fast so I would always avoid crowded places and eat at home." He explained to him and took yet another bite form the sandwich. Looking at it he calculated that he was four bites away from tasting the pudding. Excitement filled his soul as his heart stated beating a little faster with every bite he would take. He ate the last bite and then took the pubbing and the spoon and puit them in front of him. He took a deep breath and removed the cup. "I heard that this is delicious!" He mambled and finally tasted it.It was not just delicious. It was a pleasurable sensation that remained on his tongue. So sweet, so perfect, so soft. "Umai!" He said in surprise. He had never before tasted such a pudding. "I can see why Haa-chan likes it!" He spoke to himself and ate another spoon of it.
